It is a wonderful experience to observe the dance of Theyyams
with their gigantic crowns resembling the sails of ancient ships
The stories of all those Theyyams with the great crowns have
Maritime backgrounds. Visualize a Theyyam with a sailship-
Crown standing on a countryboat. It is probable that the boat
Will move with the wind .Visualize the Theyyams floating
Like gliders in the sky
We have Muththappan rhyming like Aman hatop of Egypt ,
Gulikan resembling Gilgamesh of Babylon,
Kantakarnan like Qon tiki of Polynesia,
They may be Theyyams from sea with sails as crowns
It is premature to suppose so.While agreeing that the liaison with Euro-African nations dates back to centuries, the fact that much more has come from China and and Mongolia since long if some words in Malayalam such as chai(tea),cheenachatti ets are any indication.The tribal dress and headgear and the costumes of dancers might have more in common with these neighbours rather than the Europians.
